Farm & Agricultural Storage: Are Your Fuel and Chemical Tanks Compliant?
When we think of dangerous goods, we usually picture massive B-double tankers on the highway. But the reality is that some of the largest quantities of regulated hazardous chemicals in Australia are stored right on our farms.
From massive bulk diesel tanks running the tractors, to fertilizers and toxic gases used for crop management, agricultural properties are strictly regulated by WorkSafe and the Australian Dangerous Goods (ADG) Code. If emergency services are called to a fire or incident on your property, they need to know exactly what they are dealing with the second they pull through the gates.
Here is what you need to know about placarding your farm tanks to ensure you pass your next safety audit and keep your property safe.
The "Big Three" Farm Hazards
While every farm is different, these are the three most common substances that require highly visible, legally compliant Emergency Information Panels (EIP) on agricultural properties:
-
1. Diesel Fuel (UN 1202): Almost every farm has a bulk diesel tank. While it’s less volatile than petrol, bulk diesel storage still requires proper identification. You will need a Class 3 (Flammable/Combustible Liquid) EIP clearly visible on the tank.
-
2. Anhydrous Ammonia (UN 1005): A highly effective nitrogen fertilizer, but incredibly dangerous if leaked. Because it is a Class 2.3 Toxic Gas, strict placarding is legally required on all storage vessels.
-
3. Ammonium Nitrate (UN 1942): Widely used in agricultural fertilizers, this Class 5.1 Oxidizing Agent requires clear Hazchem signage to alert first responders to the risk of accelerated combustion.
Built Tough for the Australian Sun
Let’s be honest—farm equipment takes a beating. A cheap paper sticker bought online won’t last three months on a diesel tank baking in the Queensland or regional sun.
At Stick-Dat, we manufacture our agricultural Hazchem signs specifically for these harsh environments. Every decal is printed in-house in Brisbane using premium, heavy-duty 7-year outdoor vinyl, finished with a UV-resistant laminate. They are designed to withstand UV degradation, dust, rain, and the occasional blast from a pressure washer.
